Ipplepen, Deanery of Ipplepen

Chanter 225B, 583-584

  1. Population and dissenters: A hundred and twelve – Three whereof are such Dissenters; as go under ye Denomination of Presbyterians. In these three familys are likewise 14 persons; Several of whom do occasionally, tho not constantly frequent our Parish Church.
    We have no other kind of dissenters in our Parish, nor any meeting house nor Teacher.

  2. Public or charity schools: As for a Charity School or one endowed, There is no such thing in our Parish. Three small Schools indeed we have <(one whereof is licensed)>; & in them (I can say it with comfort) our children are taught their Catechism to great perfection & very piously educated, & brought duly to ye Church as ye Canon doth require. The number of ye children now taught in ye three little schools abovementioned may amount to about fifty.

  3. Alms-house, hospital or charitable endowment: There is an Alms=house in our Parish. There are twenty shillings per annum given by one Mr John Peters, & six shillings & eight pence by one Mr Kelly to ye use of ye poor, which are applyed accordingly. There are Lands appropriated to ye use of Church & poor; & they are applyed accordingly. The majority of ye Inhabitants have ye direction, of such Benefactions. They tell me they know of no abuses or frauds committed in ye management of them nor can I find any.

  4. Residence upon cure: I do reside personally upon my Cure (being a Windsor Curate) & in ye very house yt ye Parishioners did build for ye use of ye Minister. Ipplepen is an Impropriated place, & ye Impropriatrix herself doth live in ye vicarage house (properly so called).

  5. Curate: [No answer given]

  6. Divine service at other churches: I do not.

  7. Frequency of divine service: On all Holy=days, as well as Sundays; & I preach here two Sermons every Ld's Day (such is our Custom).

  8. Frequency of communion: Four times.

  9. Number of communicants: About sixty five – Sixty do usually communicate & receive – & at Easter last, (I believe) there were sixty three.

  10. Catechising of children: At Whitsunday I usually here begin Catechizing, & continue to do so, for quarter of an year together;
    My Parishioners do send their children & servants to be instructed, but not in so general a manner as I could wish.

  11. Chapels or chapels in ruins: We have none.
