Ashprington, Deanery of Totton

Chanter 225B, 489-490

  1. Population and dissenters: We have about Eighty Families, but they are generally small save that of Mr Courtnay of Painsford.
I know but three single Persons who dissent, they are of the Presbyterian Persuasion, and frequent the Meeting=House at Totnes, there being no such House in this Parish.

  2. Public or charity schools: We have no Charity School nor any other worthy the name of a School – there is a Person who teaches a few Children to read and write for which they give him but a very triffle, I think about Six Shillings a year: Those few he has he instructs in the Church Catechism.

  3. Alms-house, hospital or charitable endowment: We have no Alms-house or Hospital endowed nor Lands for any pious use.

  4. Residence upon cure: I reside personally upon my Cure, and in my Parsonage House.

  5. Curate: I have no Curate.

  6. Divine service at other churches: I do not.

  7. Frequency of divine service: We have Divine Service twice every Lord’s Day with a Sermon in the Morning and Afternoon. We have prayers also on other Holy days whether Festivals or or [sic] Fasts when there is a Congregation.

  8. Frequency of communion: We have four Sacraments in the year at Easter, Whitsuntide Michaelmas & Christmas.

  9. Number of communicants: We have I believe, somewhat more than an Hundred and fifty of Age to communicate, several of those that have not been confirmed have not yet actually communicated, but we have generally Sixty, Seventy, and sometimes Eighty at the Sacrament; last Easter there were probably about Seventy.

  10. Catechising of children: I Catechise the Children on the Summer Sundays in the Afternoon before Sermon and they are pretty regularly sent.

  11. Chapels or chapels in ruins: We have but one Chapel in the Parish which is in a Gentleman’s House (viz Kellond Courtenay Esqr of Painsford) it is kept very neat and decent and divine Service is sometimes performd there occasionally but at present he has no Chaplain.
