Exminster, Deanery of Kenn

  1. Population and dissenters: There may be between 60 and 70 Families in my Parish. There is no Dissenter nor dissenting Meeting-house of any Denomination therein.

  2. Public or charity schools: There is a charity school maintained partly by the offertory – money and partly at my own Expence for 20 Children or as many more as shall be sent. I take care that they be duly instructed and brought to church.

  3. Alms-house, hospital or charitable endowment: Margaret Taverner in 1629 did by will bequeath a Legacy of 20s per Annum forever to ye poor of the parish payable on good friday out of an Estate called Church Stile. There is vested in a certain No of Feoffes (whereof I am one) a building on the church town consisting of divers dwellings for the poor, called ye church-house, with a backside and garden thereto belonging. A house and garden lying on ye south side of ye said church house, lett for lives at ye per Annum high rent. A garden for the use of ye poor in ye middle of the village, lying before ye said church-house & thereto belonging called Stone-Wall Garden. A Tenement and dwelling house on the North side of the said church-house, together with an orchard Garden & plot of Ground on ye backside of part of ye said church-house, and two closes thereunto adjoining consisting of about 2 Acres now in possession of Elizabeth Par for her own Life paying a head Rent of 13s and 4d – A meadow consisting of one Acre and a quarter, commonly called parish meadow, in ye possession of one Burrington for 3 lives high Rent of 2s per Annum. The Fines and Rents of all these (except ye Church house which is appropriated to ye poor) is for ye use of the parish and parishioners & inhabitants and are laid out either for ye ornaments of ye church or other good uses. I dont know nor have heard of any abuses or frauds committed in ye management of them.

  10. Catechising of children: The Children are Catechized every Sacrament Sunday i.e. twelve times in ye year. A great part of my parish being nearer to Exeter than ye parish church I cannot say that ye out-parishioners do send their children and servants so regularly as they ought to.
